Women’s History Month Spotlight – Naimah Muhammad
Fisk Athletics takes a deep dive into the lives of some of the women that impacts the university. First HBCU Gymnast to Compete Announces Retirement
NASHVILLE (March 14, 2025) – Fisk University is internationally renowned for its academic excellence, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and more recently, as the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to establish a gymnastics program. Over the years, several significant events and distinguished alumni have left their mark on its revered campus in North Nashville.
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Vice President Kamala Harris have all delivered speeches at Fisk University. Among its notable alumni are W.E.B. Du Bois, Nikki Giovanni, Congressman John Lewis, Ida B. Wells, and recent graduate Skye Faucher, who was named Miss Saint Lucia and is competing for Miss Universe.
Among these influential figures is Naimah Muhammad, a fifth-year senior and talented gymnast specializing in the Floor Exercise. Muhammad has made headlines with her impressive routines and her journey to becoming a top name in the sport. She holds the distinct honor of being the first HBCU gymnast. She is also the only gymnast to compete in tights.
Her career has been an inspiration to many, as she showcases dedication and passion for gymnastics while embracing her Muslim beliefs. In a significant moment this season, after competing at Centenary College, Muhammad announced her retirement from the sport on social media. In her heartfelt address, she expressed gratitude to her supporters and acknowledged Allah, reflecting her profound devotion as a proud Muslim.
"All praises to Allah for blessing me with this gift," Muhammad wrote. "To all the little black girls who see themselves in me, you were who I did it for."
It might be a two-letter word, but Muhammad's it is a journey through a lot of adversity on and off the mat. All season she has nursed a back injury. While keeping a smile on her face, Muhammad has consistently been a reliable teammate. Kendall Guy, a freshman, appreciates Muhammad's ability. She went to social media to express her appreciation.
"One of the best role models out there. Naimah is (sic) part of the reason that (sic) I keep going," Guy said of Muhammad. "You are so mentally tough, and I hope to be as strong as you one day."
Muhammad has kept herself busy. Being a student-athlete is hard enough, but she has also a vital part of Fisk Athletics Media Relations. Muhammad aspires to be in sports media in her next phase. One of her projects this season was working with AU Pro Basketball, a women's professional basketball team. She represented Fisk Athletics on HBCU Night during the games held at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville.
After graduation, Muhammad plans to stay in Nashville and continue her involvement in gymnastics and sports media. Her next steps will be thoughtful and deliberate.
"I am excited, but I want to make the right moves going forward. This next chapter of my life will set me up for the rest of my life."
