Lady Dawgs Fall to Oakwood in Overtime
NASHVILLE (January 9, 2025) – Post players Keeli Burton-Oliver scored all of her 21 points, in the second half, Dee Scott scored 16 and had 11 rebounds but it was not enough as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (6-12, 6-6 HBCUAC) fell in overtime to rival Oakwood University (6-10, 4-6 HBCUAC) 78-76 in conference play from Nashville.
Fisk played well in the first quarter, taking a 15-8 lead. Freshman Kayla Lee (14 points), playing in her first home game for Fisk, scored ten points in the quarter on 3-of-4 shooting from the field, hitting both of her three pointers taken.
Oakwood won the second quarter 14-11 as Kamaria Murray got hot scoring eight of her game-high 26 points to trim the lead. In the third quarter, Burton-Oliver and Murray canceled each other out, both scoring eight points, but Oakwood outscored Fisk 19-16 to cut the lead to one heading to the fourth.
In the fourth, Oakwood looked as if they put the game away after a Murray three-point basket gave her team a 54-46 lead with 5:21 left in regulation. Fisk chipped away at the lead, starting with a three-point basket by Courtney Lumpkins.
The final two minutes of regulation became very interesting. Fisk's Mya Robinson's three gave her team the lead again at 57-56 on an assist from Burton-Oliver. Jayla Bibbs (ten rebounds) split a pair of free throws to give Fisk a two-point lead.
Oakwood took the lead back on a Trenishia Adams (19 points) three with 1:14 left. Oakwood stretched the lead to three after a fast break layup by Murray. But a technical foul called on Oakwood's head coach Ronnie Abrams gave Fisk a chance to take the lead with 36 seconds left. Burton-Oliver split the two free throws, then Scott hit two free throws to tie the score. Adams then hit another three with 11 seconds left.
Murray and Morgan Bone combined for 15 points, but Burton-Oliver countered by scoring 11 in the quarter, including a three-point basket to tie the score at 64 with five seconds left to force overtime.
Oakwood scored the first five points in overtime, on an Adams three-point basket and two free throws by Saniya Keys (12 points, ten rebounds). Fisk then went on a 6-0 run to take the lead on a Scott basket with 1:47 left. After Bibbs hit two free throws to give Fisk a three-point lead, Adams tied the score with yet another basket from three with 36 seconds left.
After an Oakwood stop, Adams gave her team the lead on a fast break layup. Scott tied the score with nine seconds left on a basket in the paint with nine seconds left. A Keys putback at the buzzer gave Oakwood the win.
The Lady Bulldogs will jump out of conference play on Monday when they travel to McKenzie, Tennessee to take on Bethel.
