Lady Dawgs Get First Win of the Season
Jayla Bibb’s 21 points led five players in double figures
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (November 14, 2024) – Jayla Bibbs scored 21 points, and once again filled the scoresheet up as the Fisk University Lady Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0 HBCUAC) defeated Oakwood University (1-5, 0-1 HBCUAC) 80-65 in the opener of conference play for both teams.
"It was good to have things come together on both ends," said Fisk head coach Voctoria Crawford. "We wanted to take the crowd out of the game early Their pressure gave us fits, but we figured it out. Good win for us to start the conference off with. I hope this will propel us for the rest of the season."
Bibbs, this week's conference Defensive Player of the Week, also had eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Dee Scott got a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Laila Eliotti had a triple-double of 12 points, ten rebounds, and 11 assists. Courtney Lumpkins added 11 points, and A'Niya Young finished out the double figure scoring with ten.
First Quarter Fisk 28-14
After Oakwood opened the scoring with a free throw, Fisk's Mya Robinson hit a three-pointer from the corner to start a 9-0 run. From there the Lady Bulldogs never looked back, building a 14-point lead to end the first quarter. In the quarter, Fisk shot a blistering 58 percent from the field, with Bibbs and Scott both scoring seven points.
Half Time Fisk 48-25
Fisk took control of the game on the defensive end, holding Oakwood to 11 points on 24 percent shooting in the quarter. The Lady Bulldogs control the backboard by outrebounding Oakwood 18-9, on the strength of Laila Eliotti and Robinson's four boards apiece. Bibbs scored nine points to get Fisk going on the offensive end.
Third Quarter Fisk 67-41
Fisk only committed one turnover, and forced six in the quarter to stretch the lead to 26. A'Niya Young brought energy off the bench with six points and three rebounds.
Fourth Quarter Fisk 85-60
Oakwood outscored 20-18 in the quarter, but Fisk outrebounded Oakwood 17-10. The highlight of the quarter was Krista Brandon scoring her first career points.
The Bulldogs will continue their three game Alabama swing when they take on Stillman College on Saturday.
