Tough Start and Finish Dooms Lady Bulldogs Against Austin Peay
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.—The Fisk Lady Bulldogs couldn't overcome being outscored 42-21 in the first and fourth quarters in their 72-64 loss to the NCAA DI Austin Peay State University Lady Governors. The Lady Bulldogs went into the fourth quarter ahead by four but couldn't finish the job.
NAIA Player of the Week Maya Buckhanon recorded game-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Liz Gibbs, in her return to Austin Peay, scored a season-high 16 points. Jayla Bibbs recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded APSU 41-31 and went 24-27 from the free throw line while the Govs went 13-16.
FIRST QUARTER| APSU 16-7 Slow Start Puts Lady Bulldogs in Early Hole
The Govs scored the first eight points of the game before Buckhanon got on the board with one of her patented paint buckets. APSU stretched the lead to 14-2 then Zipporah Davis hit a three-pointer. With 33 seconds left in the quarter, Buckhanon hit two free throws.
SECOND QUARTER| Fisk 22-9 Long Run Gives Fisk a Halftime Lead
After APSU scored the first three points of the quarter, went on a 17-1 run to take the lead. Buckhanon and Gibbs were huge in the quarter combining for 20 of the 22 points.
THIRD QUARTER| Tie 21-21 Fisk Holds on to Their Advantage
APSU scored the first four points to tie the game. Fisk then got their biggest lead of the contest, on a 7-2 that was cemented by A'Niya Young's first career three-pointer to make the score 36-31 with 7:06 left in the third. APSU clawed back and took the lead 41-40 on a three-point basket. Fisk finished the quarter on a 10-5 run to go into the fourth up four.
FOURTH QUARTER| 26-14 Slow Start Hurts Fisk
The Govs took an early advantage on a 10-1 and then finished the game on top. A Gibbs three cut the advantage to 56-54 but Fisk couldn't get any closer. APSU went 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
