TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (JANUARY 6, 2025) – After a tough loss against Tougaloo College on Friday, the Fisk Bulldogs will look to break a four-game losing streak, but it won't be easy as they will take on SUNO and Dillard in the Stillman Pod. SUNO comes in on a two-game winning streak, scoring 103 in their last outing against Rust College and 91 against Wilberforce University. Reigning conference Player of the Year exploded for 41 points and 17 rebounds against Rust. He is averaging 27.8 points per game in the last five games against HBCUAC opponents. Gibson now leads the conference with a 21.8 ppg average and 15.3 rebounds per game. SUNO is averaging 85 points per game against HBCUAC opponents.
Led by veteran Tory Cargo's 16.0 ppg, Dillard has four other players averaging double figures. The team's 77.1 points per game ranks the right above SUNO's 76.5 average for second and third place in the conference.
"It must be something in that New Orleans water because both teams can score," said Fisk head coach Jeremiah Crutcher. "We will need to play defense and rebound if we want to win. We can't get in a track meet against these two teams."
Every team that plays SUNO keys on Gibson, but former Fisk Bulldog Tyon Thompson and Devin Daniels have been tough against conference opponents. Holding down Gibson's supporting cast will need to be a point of contentment.
Key Matchup (Against Dillard)
Dillard loves to get out in transition, and it starts on the defensive end. The Dawgs will need to get back on defense and make shots. A game in the 60's or low 70's will benefit Fisk.
WMG Pick2Click
Crutcher is looking for his team to play together on both ends, so the team is our Pick2Click.
Dawgs at a Glance
Don't Panic
At the press conference to announce Jeremiah Crutcher as the new coach, he told the Fisk faithful to be patient and don't panic. Crutcher has used the don't panic mantra all season. His thoughts are not to get too high when you win, and two low when you lose.
Cockrill Lives Up to Nickname
Nashville native Doyel Cockrill III was given the nickname "City Hero". His battles against Oakland University point guard Jaylon Jones since they were in middle school are still talked about by basketball savants in the city. The Cumberland University transfer has lived up to the hero name since donning the blue and gold of Fisk. He has earned conference weekly honors five times this season. He is averaging 19.9 points per game.
Coming From the Ashes
Grad student Michael Ashley made a last-minute decision to enroll into graduate school and continue his college career. Though he was undecided, Ashley stayed in the gym and weightroom during the offseason. The Atlanta native's 66 defensive rebounds lead the HBCUAC in conference play.
Famous Grandfather
Junior Lucious Jackson is one of the top defenders on the team. His famous grandfather Luke Jackson was also a defensive stopper when he played in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers. The elder Jackson was the fourth pick in the 1964 NBA Draft and won an NBA title in 1967 playing on the same frontline as Wilt Chamberlain.
UP NEXT: The Bulldogs will finally be back at home on Thursday when they take on Oakwood University.
