Dawgs Use Strong Second Half Defense to Defeat Voorhees

NASHVILLE (December 7, 2024) – Michael Ashley scored 22 points and grabbed ten rebounds, to lead four teammates in double figures as the Fisk University Bulldogs (5-9, 2-2 HBCUAC) defeated the Voorhees University Tigers (2-6, 0-3 HBCUAC) 87-58 in division play from Nashville.

Ashley shot 10-of-11 from the field in the contest, but it was a stifling defense that only gave up 21 second half points that keyed the win,

"We preach all the time about defense being best offense," said Fisk head coach Jeremiah Crutcher. "We forced 18 turnovers and only committed nine. That has to be the formula for us to win games. When we get in transition and make good plays, we look good. Our defense showed up today, and I was impressed by how hard we played."

Voorhees shot 50 percent in the first half to keep the game close. In the second half, Fisk held them to 8-of-32 from the field, forcing eight second half turnovers while only committing two.

Doyel Cockrill III scored 15 points, Asa Hardyway chipped in 12 off the bench, and Kailon Benton-Hamilton scored ten in his first start of the season.

Fisk will travel to Ohio, to play three games in the Wilberforce Pod starting Friday against Wiley University.
