Cockrill III Scores 37 In Loss to Stillman
Stillman scores the first 14 points of the game then holds on for conference win.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (November 16, 2024) – For the second time this season, Doyel Cockrill III scored a career-high, this time it was 37 points, but it was not enough as the Fisk University Bulldogs (3-4, 1-1 HBCUAC) lost to Stillman College (1-5, 2-0 HBCUAC) 87-80 in HBCU Athletic Conference action from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Cockrill III scored 35 points last Saturday against Midway University, surpassing his previous high of 32 points when he played for Cumberland University. Stillman scored the first 14 points in the game and didn't lose the lead.
"They were athletic and shot well in their own gym," said Fisk head coach Jeremiah Crutcher. "They exploited our lack of size. Their big men had their way. I was happy about how we stayed in it. We could have folded but they fought hard."
Justin McNelkan chipped in 18 points, and Kailon Benton-Hamilton 12 points in the most minutes he has played all season. All McNelkan and Benton-Hamilton's points came from behind the three-point arc.
The Bulldogs will be back home in action this Tuesday when they take on the NAIA champion Freed Hardeman.
