Bulldogs Fall to TSU in Battle of Jefferson Street
NASHVILLE (November 4, 2024) – Justin McNelkan had 16 points, and Michael Ashley added ten, but it was not enough, as the Fisk University Bulldogs (1-2) fell to Tennessee State University (1-0) 96-66 in the Battle of Jefferson Street.
The atmosphere was somewhat of a family reunion before the game, but the play on the court was intense for the highly anticipated matchup. Fisk's head coach played for TSU from 2008-2010. He was happy to be back home.
"Of course, I was nervous, but I settled down once we got to the gym," said Crutcher. "I walked on the court, and many TSU fans greeted me. Once the ball was tipped, it was basketball. My guys fought hard. I am happy with their effort."
McNelkan and Ashley scored five points each to account for Fisk's Fisk ten points, but TSU went on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
A scary moment happened late in the first half when Fisk junior Asa Hardyway drove to the basket and was fouled hard. After splitting his two free throws, he left the game and didn't return, suffering from an upper-body injury.
Fisk will now focus on Saturday for its homecoming; the team will play its home opener against Midway University.
