Four Bulldogs Honored at the HBCUAC Awards Ceremony
Doyel Cockrill III and Keeli Burton-Oliver named to the first team.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (February 26, 2025) - The Fisk University Bulldogs' determination and hard work have not gone unnoticed this season. Four Fisk University basketball players came away with seven awards on Wednesday during the HBCUAC's Award Ceremony. On the women's side, seniors Keeli Burton-Oliver and Jayla Bibbs snatched two awards apiece. Burton-Oliver, in her first year in a Fisk uniform, had a strong second half of the season, earning her five Newcomer of the Week honors. The Sammamish, Washington native, was named to the conference's first team and newcomer team. Bibbs, a preseason all-first teamer, was named All Conference Second team and for the second year in a row made the conference All Defensive team.
As for the men, sophomore Doyel Cockrill III, a nine-time conference weekly winner, was named the Newcomer of the Year and All Conference First Team. Cockrill III averaged 19.7 points per game and finished second in the league in three pointers made. Graduate student Michael Ashley, who broke 1,000 career points and rebounds this year, was named to the All-Defensive team for the second time. He was also named to the team in 2023. Ashley averaged a double-double this season. The small forward held his own playing out of position against the conference's big men.
The tenth seeded men's team will take on Wilberforce University tonight at 8 p.m. The women advanced yesterday, and will play Philander Smith University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
