Price Becomes HBCU Sports’ First Female Athlete of the Year
Morgan Price adds another National honor to her trophy case.
CROSSROADS, Tx. (July 27, 2024) – Fisk University gymnast Morgan Price has enjoyed an interesting summer. While most college students were getting some rest and relaxation, Price has been on an awards tour. This past weekend, the Price, who made history as the first HBCU gymnast to become a national champion, was named the Female Athlete of the Year by HBCU Sports during their inaugural award show.
"I came to Fisk to make history, and this is a great accomplishment for the university and me," said Price. To be the first to win this award is special. There are so many people that share this honor with me. My family, my teammates, and supporters have been an inspiration for me. I am aware that there are little black and brown girls out there watching me. My hope is to continue to inspire them just like I was."
Hosted by the HBCU Sports crew of Publisher Kenn Rashad and reporters Kendrick Marshall, Chris Stevens, and Jarrett Hoffman, the virtual show recognized athletes in 23 categories, administrators in 10, and coaches in 12 others from across the HBCU landscape.
The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, now the HBCU Athletic Conference, received two awards. Commissioner Dr. Kiki Baker Barnes was named the Commissioner of the Year. The conference was named Conference of the Year. Fisk participates in seven sports in the conference.
The HBCU Sports Awards also presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to men and women contributors. Former Fisk women's basketball head coach Teresa Phillips received one of the Lifetime Achievement Awards. Also honored was Tennessee State University football player.
