72 Fisk Athletes Named to Final GCAC Commissioner's Honor Roll
Four athletes notch perfect 4.0 grade point average during their season.
NEW ORLEANS (June 28, 2024) - Last week, Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Kiki Baker-Barnes announced her honor roll for the 2023-24 Academic Year. Of the 487 student-athletes named, Fisk University had 72 to make the list, placing them second in the conference behind Dillard University, which fields three more sports than Fisk.
This is the final honor presented under the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference's name. On July 1, 2024, the conference will be rebranded as the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference.
For a student-athlete to qualify, they must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average in the semester their sport ends. 34 conference student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Henry Alumona (Men's Soccer), Oluwalonimi Awogbenila (Men's Soccer), Zipporah Davis (Women's Basketball), and Natasha Veness (Women's Volleyball) made that list from Fisk.
"I know first-hand how hard it is to maintain a high GPA and participate in athletics at this level," said Fisk athletic director Valencia Jordan. "Congratulations to the 487 students that made a list and the 72 of our students. We strive to do whatever is needed to make good marks on and off the playing surfaces. This is a great way to go into the new conference on a high note."
Not mentioned on the list is Fisk women's golfer Dabeluchukwu Okolo, who became the first Fisk athlete to earn the Valedictorian honor for her class. Okolo competed in the Continental Athletic Conference in her sport and earned a 4.0 GPA.
