Fisk Duo Combine for Record 99 Points
Maya Buckhanon and Jayden Lockett have huge nights to help their teams to victories over SUNO.
NEW ORLEANS – While the NBA was participating in the annua All Star Weekend in Indianapolis, a couple of Fisk University Bulldogs were putting on All Star type performances in New Orleans.
NAIA All American Maya Buckhanon broke Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and school records in her 60-point performance on Saturday to lead her team to an 87-70 victory over Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO). In the men's game, Jayden Lockett scored 25 of his career-high 39 points as Fisk squeaked by with a 79-76 win.
Buckhanon's effort fell two points short of the NAIA record by Miriam Walker-Samuels of Chaflin (SC) University in 1988. She did set the GCAC and Fisk record for points scored, and field goals made (24). Buckhanon is up for the NAIA National, the Associated Press, Tennessee Sports Writers Association, and GCAC Player of the Week honors. She won the National and Tennessee awards in December. This would be her eighth time winning in the conference this season.
For Lockett, the 39 points are the most by anyone in the conference on the men's side. After missing two free throws with his team up by three points in the final minute, he stepped back to the line with Fisk up by one point and made two clutch free throws to force SUNO to take a desperation three-point shot to try to send the game into overtime.
Their combined 99 points is a Fisk record. At the publishing time of this story, it is still not clear if it is a NAIA or GCAC record.
