Fisk University to Host NAIA Selection Watch Party
2023-24 Lady Bulldogs, first Fisk Women’s Basketball team to advance to national tournament.
NASHVILLE - At 6pm, Thursday, March 7, 2024, Fisk University is inviting the public to attend their National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) selection watch party. There, NAIA will reveal where the Lady Bulldogs are seeded, who they'll compete against, and in what city the competition will take place.
The Lady Bulldogs were awarded the automatic bid to compete in the NAIA national competition after advancing to the final championship competition against Rust College in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference March 5, 2024.
"This is tremendous for the university but especially for the players," said Fisk University Head Coach Victoria Crawford, who boasts a winning season record of 20-9." Their work ethic, tenacity, grit, and dedication are not only making history at the university but is setting them up to be winners in life. I'm excited for them and proud of them."
In addition to making history by advancing to the national competition stage, the Lady Bulldogs are celebrating a winning season of many firsts for the 2023-24 season: first time since 1986 that they've won 20 games, first time the Women's Basketball team made it to the GCAC champion ship game, power forward Maya Buckhanon is the first Fisk player to score 60 points in one game and the first to do so, this century, in the NAIA.
Thursday's selection watch show will take place in the Appleton Room on Fisk's campus. Those invited include former Fisk Head Coach Teresa Phillips, former Fisk Athletic Director Dr. Harriet Hamilton, Fisk Hall of Famer Renee Spencer, and others.
